Footnotes:
1: (F-135) Leigh Douglas Brackett (1915-1978) was one of the earliest of the women science fiction (and fantasy) writers. Her first published science fiction story, Martian Quest, appeared in Astounding in 1940. She was a prolific writer in the genres of science fiction (her most recognized story is probably The Long Tomorrow, c. 1955), mystery, and western as well as television and movie scripts ("The Big Sleep" - 1946 and "Rio Bravo" - 1958).

2: (F-156) Roy Gerald Krenkel Jr. (1918-1983) had an early fascination for the works of E. R. Burroughs and the art of J. Allen St. John. A commerical artist who preferred pen and ink, Krenkel's reputation was established by the cover art for ACE Books and DAW illustrating the works of E. R. Burroughs and other fantasy works in that genre. He received the Hugo Award (1963) for Best Artist of the Year, as well as a Heroic Fantasy Award, a special award for his art at the 1982 World Fanasy Convention, and a Bronze Hammer Award (by Robert E. Howard fandom).

3: (F-178) Richard M. Powers (1921-1996) employed a range of illustration styles that influenced generations of artists. His covers are distinctive and invoke connections with surrealism, symbolism, and the abstract. He signed his works in many ways, ranging from Gorman (or Gorman Powers) to Powers LAZ/Org. An amazingly prolific artist, the best source for additional information is Jane Frank's The Art of Richard Powers (Paper Tiger, 2001).

4: (F-210) Peter George (1924-1966) spent most of his career in the Royal Air Force. He wrote two novels. "Two Hours to Doom" (c. 1958, UK) was later titled "Red Alert" for the U.S. market and carries his pseudonym Peter Bryant. Red Alert (1958) is the basis of the 1963 film Dr. Strangelove, Or How I Stopped Worrying and Started to Love the Bomb, directed by Stanley Kubrick. His "Commander -1" (c. 1965, UK) is a further treatment of nuclear warfare. He committed suicide in 1966.

5: (F-216) Robert Emil Schultz (1928-1978) was an illustrator (with a degree in architecture from Princeton University) who produced cover art for Pocket, Signet, Dell, and Bantam as well as illustations for "men's" magazines such as Adventure and Men's Digest. In addition to his well received cover art for I, Robot, he also did many western covers that included a series of reissues of Zane Grey stories by Pocket Books.

6: (F-222) Jefferson Howard Sutton (b. 1913) studied at San Diego State College (now University of California - San Diego), served in the United States Marine Corps, and had been a photographer and newsman. Another part of his career was devoted to research into survival at high altitudes.

7: (F-243) Alex Schomburg (1905-1998) was born in Aquadilla, Puerto Rico. After emigrating to New York City, he (and his brothers) became successful commercial artist after apprenticing in the art studio of Fred Dahme. Introduced to science fiction by Hugo Gernsback, he moved to pulp and magazine illustration (The Experimenter, Radio Craft, Amazing Stories, etc). He has won every major award for science fiction and comic art, and for six decades his work was the 'example' of illustration art.

8: (F-248) Raymond King Cummings (1887-1957) was an adventurer (gold prospecting, oil field, and orange plantations) and later an editor for Thomas Alva Edison. His writing career spanned thirty years and he is most remembered for one of his earliest stories, "The Girl in the Golden Atom" (c. 1919), as well as being one of the authors used by Hugo Gernsback in the early Amazing pulp magazine.

9: (F-296) Edwin Lester Armold (1857-1935) was the son of Sir Edwin Arnold whose book, "Light of Asia." introduced Victorian readers to the teachings of Buddha. "Gulliver of Mars" (c. 1905, UK) has been seen as a prelude to Edgar Rice Burrough's Martian series that was published seven years later.

10: (F-304) Roger Sherman Hoar (1887-1963) graduated from Harvard and taught engineering and mathematics before taking charge of a company legal and patents department. He also was a Wisconsin senator. He wrote for most of the pulp magazines during the 1930's and 1940's. The "Radio Man" series,  from which three novels were finally published, all appeared as magazine serializations (Argosy All Story Weekly) between 1924 and 1926.

11: (F-318) Austin Hall (1883-1933) wrote mainly in the Western genre. His science fiction writings were mainly in pulps (Argosy, All-Story Weekly, and Weird Tales) and his most recognized (or berated) work is collaboration with Homer Eon Flint in "The Blind Spot" (c. 1921 in Argosy, later published separately in 1951).  He wrote an independent sequel "The Spot of Life" (c. 1921 in Argosy, later published separately in 1964).

12: (F-325) Gray Morrow (1934-2001) attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, but was mostly self-taught. Introduced to Wally Wood in 1954, he soon embarked on illustration for DC Comics. Drafted in the Korean War, he developed an interest in painting that led to his work in many magazines and books. His artwork ranges from Mad Magazine and Cracked to comic books and men's magazines. In science fiction and fantasy, his work is found in Galaxy, Analog, If, and Fantasy and Science Fiction as well-crafted covers or interior illustrations.  He almost completely provided all of the cover art for the Perry Rhodan series published by ACE Books.

13: (F-345) Homer Eon Flint (188? - 1924) is remembered for (with Austin Hall) "The Blind Spot" (serialized in Argosy, later published in 1951). His short career provided many stories to the pulps (Argosy and All-Story Weekly) during the early 1920's and novels were derived from stories originating in those magazines.

14: (F-346) Jerome Podwil (b.1938) graduated from the Pratt School of Art and Design in 1960. He has provided art for the science fiction, mystery, gothic, and western genres as well as other magazines (Playboy) and publishers (New American Library).

15: (F-367) Philip Jose Farmer (1918-2009) won several Hugo Awards as Most Promising New Author in 1953 for his pioneering alien-sex stories in The Lovers (1952); for Riders of the Purple Wage in Dangerous Visions (1967); and for To Your Scattered Bodies Go (1971). In 2001, SFWA honoured him as a Grand Master.

16: (F-373) Jack Jardine (1931-2009) wrote the four Agent of T.E.R.R.A. tales (ACE G letter-number series) under the Larry Maddock pseudonym. He also wrote as Arthur Farmer and, with his wife Julie Ann Jardine, under the pseudonym of Howard L. Cory for The Sword of Lankor.

16: (F-376) Lewis Byford Patten  (January 13, 1915 – May 22, 1981) was a prolific author of American Western novels, born and died in Denver, Colorado. He often published under the names Lewis Ford, Len Leighton and Joseph Wayne. He used the last two names when writing in collaboration with Wayne D. Overholser.

17: (F-421) Doanald E. Westlake (1933-2008) was a prolific, witty and popular crime writer who won three Edgar Awards and was 1993's Mystery Writers of America Grand Master for life achievement. His science fiction and fantasy includes over 30 stories from 1954-1984, many collected in The Curious Facts Preceding My Execution (1968) and Tomorrow's Crimes (1989). Novels in this genre were Anarchaos (1967 as by Curt Clark), Humans (1992), and Smoke (1995).

8: (F-391) More use of the same cover art, let's look at the 1958 West German (Hamburg) edition of Andre Norton's The Crossroads of Time (as Am Kreuzweg der Zeit).
